STUDENT PROGRAMS

The WIC organization offers several opportunities to help students attend college.

STUDENT CHAPTER (BACK TO TOP)

Association of Students in Communication (ASC) is comprised of UNLV & CCSN students majoring in communications. Each group offers many opportunities to its members, and dues are only $20 for the year. Student members are able to attend WIC luncheons at no charge through our Student Lunch Sponsor Program, are able to access the WIC Job Bank to find jobs after graduation and can participate in our Intern program that will allow the opportunity for school credit and/or payment for a job in the Communications industry. Best of all, ASC students can qualify for special scholarships through UNLV & CCSN.

SCHOLARSHIPS (BACK TO TOP)

WIC awards scholastic funding annually to UNLV & CCSN students who are members of ASC and meet specific criteria. ASC members may apply for ASC Scholarships through the University/College itself. Awards are based on the student's involvement in ASC and/or WIC, academic achievement, and other factors and are generally $2,000 per student. Applications are available each February and recipients are selected in March.

In 2000, WIC introduced the DeAnne Sheehan Communications Merit Scholarship to award $3,000 to a Junior or Senior with a 3.85 GPA or better. This scholarship was created to honor DeAnne Sheehan, founder of the Electronic Media Awards, as acknowledgment of her ongoing commitment to WIC.

WIC also awards "Special Needs" scholarships through the UNLV Foundation. Ranging from $500 to $1,000, the scholarships aid returning students, part-time students and students with special needs.

INTERN PROGRAMS (BACK TO TOP)

Through WIC, ASC students can work with the internship coordinator to help match the students with businesses who need them. Internships are a good way for students to gain work experience in the industry. Interns can be paid or receive educational credit. Students seeking credit must register the internship through their advisor, then contact Michelle Jackson for a list of available internships at (702)457-4677.
